FREELANCE CREATIVE DESIGN

Hello! I'm Hamish, a web designer and graphic artist based in Cairns, Queensland. I've been working as a freelancer for several years now, and I've discovered that my 'niche' is working with independent business owners on creating an architecture of digital media around their businesses that enhances and grows their brand. I have worked with some truly awesome businesses owners and entrepreneurs, both locally here in Cairns and around the world on-line.

My view when it comes to design work is to inject simple functionality, but also 'personality' into any project. Making creative choices for your business should not be grueling, I think it should be a fun process. I'll help you make those choices and at the same time lay the foundations of a brand that is full of flavour, personality and a unique, creative quality.

WHAT'S NEW

DEVIL IN THE DETAILS

Vector art, from my perspective, has always been a startlingly impressive field of design. The first piece of design software I really learned as at a professional level was Photoshop, so when I decided to dip into vector, I of course turned to Adobe Illustrator.

On the surface level it seemed that those two programs are very close in nature, but once I started working with vectors I was surprised just how different the workflow really is. Photoshop felt much looser, and more open to experimentation. To me Illustrator was rigid and obtuse. It felt like work trying to learn it. But somewhere along the line, the program started to click. Each tool began to make sense, and I could start to see how some of my favorite digital artists and designers would make their incredible looking work with vectors.

Although Photoshop really feels like 'home' to me, I always love to dive back into Illustrator from time to time, just for fun. The piece below started as a sketch in Photoshop on my Wacom tablet, which I then moved over to Illustrator. I really love the look that can be achieved with vector, even in this traditional, comic book like style.

I don't really know where this devil guy came from, but I was very happy with the result, so I've decided to use him in some of my self promotional material.

GOOD QUE'

It can be quite disconcerting, working on a project that seems designed to make you, as the person overseeing branding and visual design for said project, extremely hungry. That was the dilemma I faced with a client that I've been working with recently.

The client is Chef Roderick Pieper, a name well known throughout the Riverina region of New South Wales. His new project is something different for both him, as an experienced chef and food aficionado, and myself as a designer. It's called 'Reggie P's Road Trips: Texas BBQ', and as the name suggests, it's all about the best 'que' in the world.  Chef Rod will be leading small, intimate guided tours across the great state of Texas next year, exploring the cultural hot-spots of American barbecue along the way.

My job, so far, has been to build a look around the Reggie P material that is interesting, textured and representative of that que culture, as well as a website (still in development) and social media and custom email accounts. It's still early days for the project, but since Chef Rod is starting to get the word out the about Reggie P's, I thought I'd throw a few samples on here.

If you're interested in the Reggie P Texas tour, don't hesitate to hit Chef Rod up for some more details via info@reggiepsroadtrips.com.au or grab some info here.
